Charging:

Ni-Cd and Ni-MH batteries can be charged at different rates depending from the application requirements.

  • Permanent Charge
When the charge is continiously maintained. The recommended charging rate is from C/20 to C/15 for Ni-Cd and from C/20 to C/30 for Ni-MH.

  • Standard Charge
The standard charge is 14 - 16 hours at a current rate of C/10 which may be applied to both Ni-Cd and Ni-MH cells at a temperature range between 0 °C and +50 °C.

  • Quick Charge
The quick charge rate can be applied only to cells designed for, at a temperature range between +5 °C and +40 °C. Once full charge is reached the charging cycle must be properly switched off by an electronic control in order to avoid overcharge conditions in the battery.

  • Fast Charge
Fast charge takes from 1 to 2 hours and it's applicable only to cells designed for. One or more charge cut-off controls (-DeltaV, Timer) must be adopted to assure as high as possible a safety charging. The temperature range is from +5 °C to 35 °C.

  • Trickle Charge
Trickle charge follows standard and quick charge and it consists in a low rate current maintenance of the battery, normally between C/40 and C/20, in order to compensate the self-discharge, to maintain the battery in a fully charge state and to balance the cells of the battery. A trickle charge is mandatory after fast or ultra-fast charge.

  • Ni-Cd and Ni-MH Button cells charging
The charge rate must be between C/20 and C/50 for Ni-Cd cells and from C/30 down to C/50 for Ni-MH cells. WARNING! - Too high temperatures are detrimental to cycle life and performance of Ni-MH batteries. Always use chargers with appropriate cut-off methods.

  • Li-ION Battery Charging
Li-ION Battery Charging The charging method for Li-ION cells is based on CCCV control. A charge termination control (low current limit or timer) is in some cases recommended. Always use specific chargers (see Battery Chargers for details).
